Summary: What is the current status of individual states in regard to establishing healthcare exchanges? The deadline for states to decide is December 14, 2012.
The deadline for states to submit their intentions of whether or not to create healthcare exchanges was originally set for November 16, 2012. The deadline has been extended until December 14, 2012. This is one of the many provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The ACA gives states the option to choose whether or not to create a state sponsored health care exchange. If states opt not to create, the federal government will step in and set one up for them. A healthcare exchange is basically a marketplace for consumers to be informed about and have the ability to purchase health insurance. Exchanges will provide education to consumers about different plan options and allow consumers to compare and contrast based upon the value perceived.
