Hospital charges for the same services can vary greatly from hospital to hospital. The Department of Health and Human Services(HHS) and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) have created a database making some of these charges available to the public.
It is evident that there will be a shortage of physicians. We have a shortage now. So, we are going to expand Medicaid and potentially have an extremely large number of additional lives that could be covered. This new group, while not all of course, but a good number are going to visit a doctor for the first time or the first time in a long time. Additionally, the exchanges will be implemented in full force adding another group of eligible consumers. How are we going to be able to treat this huge influx? These are just the new issues. We still have an aging population who require additional care. 2014 is going to a very tenuous year for healthcare in terms of supply and demand.
Preliminary studies show mixed results in terms of costs/usage and diagnosis/treatment as a result of Medicaid expansion.
